Is there normally a serial number on older rifles and shotguns from the forties and fifties?

Depends on the manufacturer, some do and some don't if they were made prior to the National Firearms Act of 1964. s/n's will appear on NFA required parts being the frame or receiver. Optionally, mfg's may also stamp the whole or last few digits of the s/n on the barrel, bolt, stock and any other pertinent parts that may be fitted to a particular gun.
