There was a question in the Parade magazine today about what happened to Hitler's pistols and also General George Patton's ivory handled pistols. The answer on Patton was that "one was a 1873 Colt .45 and the other a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum. That kind of threw me since I always thought his pistols were a pair of .45's. I was a boy during the war and remember the newspapers and magazines as well as returning soldiers always referred to a pair of .45's. I did not even hear of Magnum until the fifties. I looked it up and found the following site which is interesting to me. www.rt66.com/~korteng/SmallArms/1stmag.htmI am interested in guns but not a gun nut - I got my first .22 rifle when I was 11 years old and still have it.

I won't begin to speculate on Hitler's pistols, as the body of the stories Ihave heard fail to agree on much.
I will not say where or when, but in historical terms it was my privilidge to view and hold Parabellums #3, #7 & #9 all of which remain in private hands in the US. They were in magnificent condition indicating they had been presented to their original owners and kept cased and unused. All 3 were brought back to the US in the late 40s by an officer they were given to in Germany who was entrusted to keep them from being destroyed and prevent them from becoming political.
A month prior to his death he arranged with a well respected gunsmith to sell the guns in amanner that generated the greatest return for his widow. The guns were sold to 3 individuals and the widow is able to live very well.
