I have a project where I need to thread 1 inch of the center of a 6 inch rod. I want the ends to be smooth and non threaded. I don't have a lathe or easy access to one at this location. Any ideas???

You could cut a 1" piece of threads. Drill and tap each end and screw in a 2.5" rod.

That may work... I will try it first. I will probably have to use locktite to keep it from working loose.

Depending on the thread pitch, you could measure, wrap, scribe and file.
